9 Easy Ways To Have The Vacation of Your Dreams in Santorini

If you’ve been flirting with the idea of taking romantic trip to Santorini, now is the time to fall in love. TripAdvisor just named Santorini, the volcanic hot spot in the Aegean Sea, one of the most heavenly isles in the world. Santorini is second only to Maui in TripAdvisor’s annual ranking. So what are you waiting for? Here are 9 ways to have the vacation of your dreams in Santorini:

1. Sleep in a Cave House

For the most unique stay in Santorini, head to Oia. The town’s traditional cave homes offer some of the most breathtaking views of the indigo sea and the caldera. The white-washed homes are carved into the side of a volcanic cliff. Most homes have terraces, the perfect spot to gaze at the sea and daydream. Check out Airbnb for some unbelievable accommodations, both charming and luxurious.  And staying in Oia means you’ll be steps away from cute shops and the best restaurants on the island.

2. Wine Taste on Top of the World

Santorini is one of the oldest wine regions in the world, and a must stop on the island is Santo Winery.  It’s in Pyrgos, the closest spot you’ll get to heaven on this heavenly island. Wine tasting is on the terrace with a panoramic view of the sea. Most travelers head to Oia to take in the sunset, but this spot is magical when the sun meets the sea. The bus from Fira will take you right to the winery.

3. Swim in Paradise

Go to Amoudi Bay for the best swimming spot in Santorini. It takes some effort to get there, but the crystal clear water and rocky cliff that’s perfect for jumping is worth it. First, walk down the stairs in Oia to Amoudi Bay harbor. It’s 300 steps! Make a left and walk past several restaurants serving fresh fish and lobster pasta with ouzo (YUM!). Keep walking along the cliff face until you find the swimming spot. Beware of sea urchins and sharp rocks.

4. Visit the Lost City of Atlantis

One of the new things to check out in Santorini is stand up paddle boarding. It’s an amazing way to see the rocky volcanic shoreline and get a workout at the same time. Grab a paddle and a board and go on an expedition from the prehistoric town of Akrotiri (some believe this is the mythical town of Atlantis) to Vlychada. The tour with Santorini Sea Kayak is 60€.

5. Rent ATVs and Ride Around the Island

Getting from one end of the island to the other end takes less than one hour, so renting an ATV helps you cover a lot of ground.  It’s a great way to see the picturesque spots on the island that tourists never see. Renting an ATV will cost you 15€-75€ a day.

6. Soak up the Sun on Black Beaches

The beaches of Santorini are like no other. But the long stretches of black pebbly volcanic sand will definitely fry your feet.  That’s why there are plenty of lounge chairs with umbrellas.  Buy a drink and some fresh fruit and relax. The most popular beaches on the island are Perissa and Kamari. Perissa has more of the beach party vibe.  Kamari is better for families.  Both spots are easy to get to by bus from the Fira bus station.

7. Eat Gyros on the Street

The best food is often found in surprising places.  Lucky’s Gyros will be the best gyros you will eat in all of Greece, trust me!  It’s a no-frills spot right by the bus station in Fira.  For a couple of euros, you will have one of the best meals in Santorini.  Don’t miss this spot!

8. Ride a Donkey

After walking down the 300 steps from Oia to Amoudi Bay, the trip back to town is daunting. But don’t worry, the most touristy thing to do in Santorini is actually a must do!  A donkey ride up the cliff to Oia is only 5€. The experience left me laughing so hard I was crying.

9. Escape to the Hot Springs

Swimming in the hot springs is just one of those unique experiences that those who travel to Santorini talk about for years. Boat tours leave from Old Fira Port, and once at the hot springs, travelers jump off the boat into the cool sea and swim towards the warm springs and famous mud baths. Definitely wear an older bathing suit for this trip and not your favorite.
